この映画から感じられる、愛国心、物語へ
の愛、人物への愛。第二次大戦当時、政府の
依頼を受けて製作した国威高揚作品にして、
遊び心もあり、芸術性も高い。100回は観た！
オリヴィエにとって、最初の監督作にして、私個人的に彼の最高傑作と思う作品（そう言う方、結構多いです）。この映画から感じられる、愛国心、演劇への愛、人物への愛。そして、作中随所に散りばめられた粋な工夫や試み、そして遊び心。実に後味の良い、観終えて気持ちの良い映画です。
この映画は、私が演劇に夢中になって行くきっかけでした！
本作は、1944年製作、つまり第二次大戦が終息してゆく時期に、当時ナチスの脅威と何とか渡りあった英国で、英国政府の支援を受け、戦意高揚、あるいは国家の一致団結を意図して作られたものです。この当時の英国の精神の高まり、感じますよね。ちなみに同じ時期に米国では「我等の生涯の最良の年(The Best Years of Our Lives)」という、やはり帰還軍人を扱った映画が作られています。
国威高揚映画という側面を持ちつつも、とても芸術的で、自戒的要素も持つとっても人間的な、そして鼓舞する場面など魂に訴えかける力強さを持つ素晴らしさ！

- ストーリー
- 1600年のロンドンの遠景から始まり、その中にたたずむグローブ座。そこに詰め掛けた多くの聴衆を前にして、上演されるのはヘンリー五世のアジンコートの戦い。当時、すでに「ヘンリー四世」の戯曲を知っていた聴衆は、放埓な日々を送っていたハル王子が成長した姿に、驚きながらも喝采を送る。やがて舞台は劇場の中から、屋外へと移ってゆく・・・。
途中登場する病の老人は、ハル（ヘンリー五世）の旧悪友で、「ヘンリー四世」で大人気を博した人物フォールスタッフ、映画中の聴衆の反応で人気のほどが判ります。オリヴィエは、本来「五世」にはない「四世」第二部の最後の部分（「おまえなど私は知らぬ」、っていう可哀想な場面）を映画中に加え、病床のフォールスタッフに回想させる、という粋な試みをしています。 - cast in order of appearance

- なんと言っても観る側（聴く側？）が釘付けになるのが、兵士達を鼓舞する場面だと思います。
ここで２つの場面の台詞を記載してみます。英語です！
・ハーフラーへの突撃場面
Once more ,unto the breach！ dear friends once more ,or close the
wall up with our English dead！
In peace ,there is nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility. but when the blast of war blows in our ears ,then imitate the action of the tiger .stiffen the sinews ,summon up the blood ,disguise fair nature with hard favoured rage .then lend the eye a terrible aspect ,let it pry through the portage of the head like the brass cannon .let the brow o’erwhelm it as fearfully as doth a galled rock o’erhang jutty his confounded base swilled with the wild and wasteful ocean .
Now set the teeth ,and stretch the nostril wide ,hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit to his full height .
On on ,your noblest English ,whose blood is fet from fathers of war proof .Fathers that like so many Alexanders have in these parts from morn til even fought ,and sheathed their swords for lack of argument .dishonor not your mothers .
Now attest that those whom you called your father did beget you .Be copy now to men of grosser blood and teach them how to war .
And you good yorman whose limbs were made in England ,you show us hear the mettle of your pasture .let us swear that you are worth your breeding .Which I doubt not ,for there is none of you so mean and base ,that hath not noble lustre in your eyes .
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips ,straining upon the start ,the game is afoot ,follow your spirit ,and upon this charge cry “God for Harry ,England and St.Jorge!”

What’s he that wishes so！ my cousin Westmorland？ No my fair cousin if we are march to die we are enough to do our country loss .and if to live the fewer man the greater share of honor .God’s will ,I pray thee ,wish not one man more .
Rather proclaim it Westomreland ,through my host ,that he that hath no stomach to this feast ,let them depart .his passport shall be drown and crowns for convoy put into his purse .we would not die in that man’s company that fears his fellowship to die with us .
This day is called the feast of Christpian .He that outlives this day and comes safe home will stand a tiptoe and this day is named and rouse him at the name of Christpian .he that shall live this day and see old age will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbors and say “tomorrow is St.Christpian” .then he will strip his sleeves and show his scars and say “these wounds I had on Christpian’s day” .Old men forget yet old shall be forgot ,but he’ll remember with advantages what feats he did that day .Then shall our names familiar in his mouth as household words ,Harry the King ,Bedford and Exeter ,Warwick and Talbot ,Souldsbury ,young Glouster ,be in their flowing cups freshly remembered .This story shall the good man teach his son .and Christpin Christpian shall ne’er go by from this day to the ending of the world .But we in it shall be remembered .We few ,we happy few ,we band of brothers .For he today that shed his blood with me shall be my brother ,be he ne’er so base .and gentlemen in England now a bed shall think themselves accursed that they were not here .and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us upon St.Christpian’s day！
これら以外にも、最初のフランス使節を一喝する場面、決戦前に身代金は要らぬと言い放つ場面、など、舞台俳優のお手本、とも言うべき鮮やかさ。
また、決戦前夜が対照的にとても静かで、孤独な独白とともに、とても効いています。
そして多くの人が、素晴らしい！と口を揃える、アジンコート戦でのフランス騎馬隊の突撃場面。徐々に速度を上げ、ウィリアム・ウォルトンの音楽に乗りながら、カメラも段々引いて、迎え撃つ英国軍の弓矢隊が矢を放つ！名場面です。
